Fortify Civil Rights for the Next Four Years —Your Action Needed Now
As we approach the end of 2024, the fight for fair housing faces unprecedented challenges. With only a few hundred dollars raised toward our $8,000 goal, we urgently need your support to equip Long Island Housing Services with the tools necessary to defend civil rights over the next four years.
Proposed policy changes threaten to dismantle critical protections, potentially reversing decades of progress in civil rights.
Proposed Threats to Fair Housing:
The incoming administration has signaled intentions to roll back key civil rights protections, including:
- Devastate the Department of Housing and Urban Development by what they call “a broad reversal of the Biden administration’s persistent implementation of corrosive progressive ideologies across the department’s programs.” HousingWire
- Eviscerating the Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH) Rule: This rule requires communities to proactively address discrimination and segregation. Its weakening could hinder efforts to promote equal housing opportunities. Bipartisan Policy
- End strides in Appraisals toward a non-discriminatory system Shelterforce
- Defund Community Block Grants and HOME funds Housing Finance
- Banning “racial equity and anti-discrimination training, including affirmative action, and removing policies designed to achieve racial equity .”National Fair Housing Alliance
- Rescinding Anti-Discrimination Rules: Plans to eliminate the Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH) rule, which mandates proactive measures against segregation, jeopardize efforts to create inclusive communities. National Fair Housing Alliance
- Forbidding the Department of Justice from pursuing “discrimination claims on behalf of people of color.” National Fair Housing Alliance
- Weakening Enforcement Mechanisms: Proposals to dilute the Disparate Impact Rule would make it more difficult to challenge policies that result in unintentional discrimination, undermining protections for marginalized groups. National Fair Housing Alliance
- Undermine LGBTQ+ protections by “rolling back protections against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity” National Fair Housing Alliance
- Hide discrimination by dismantling the “race/ethnicity data collection used to detect discrimination”
