Staff Attorney – Foreclosure Prevention Program, Long Island Housing Services, Inc.

Long Island Housing Services, Inc. seeks to fill an immediate vacancy for a licensed New York State Attorney.  The Staff Attorney will advocate and provide legal services for Nassau and Suffolk homeowners who are in jeopardy of foreclosure on their primary residence.  Successful recruit will work under direct supervision of the Foreclosure Prevention Program Manager or designee.  Bi-lingual, fluent Spanish-English speaking/written skills are a plus.  Experience helpful, not required – will train.  Beginning annual salary: $47,800, negotiable with direct foreclosure law experience, includes generous benefits package. This is an exempt position.

Sample Work Responsibilities:

  • Intake/interview new clients and maintain/manage case files until close out
  • Provide clients with advice and counsel on foreclosure process and foreclosure prevention options
  • Prepare and review loan modification proposals/packages for submission to lender or servicer
  • Provide advice and counsel on short sale/deed-in-lieu of foreclosure
  • Communicate with banks/bank attorneys on behalf of clients, and negotiate affordable loan terms
  • Attend NYS mandatory settlement conferences in the Supreme Courts of Nassau and Suffolk
  • Assist clients with preparing/serving/filing pro se answer to summons and complaint
  • Review loan modification offers with clients
  • Provide legal advice to clients on options if loan modification not feasible
  • Collaborate closely with other advocates, such as attorneys/housing counselors
  • Maintain and submit timely reports on case/client activity

Responsibilities may also include special projects and research, outreach, and education of community and industry groups.  Staff assignments may include other duties as required, such as assistance to advocate for the continuation of funding.
