Long Island Housing Services, Inc.  is seeking a dynamic individual to coordinate community and media outreach and public interest advocacy efforts to educate and assist at-risk populations about foreclosure rescue scam prevention services and Fair Housing rights.

Outreach/Media Coordinator needed immediately to educate and alert homeowners who are at risk of falling victim to a foreclosure rescue scam, and to assist victims of foreclosure rescue scams with filing reports to enforcement authorities. (more…)

Dr. Carson must address Severe Economic Injury to Communities of Color: NFHA

The National Fair Housing Alliance strongly urges Dr. Ben Carson, in his new role as Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), to tackle immediately the many critical housing challenges that our country faces.  Many of these are a legacy of the financial and foreclosure crises which disproportionately impacted America’s communities of color. These communities have yet to recover.  Housing inequality has had a devastating effect on individuals, communities and businesses and HUD plays a pivotal role in eliminating this inequality. FHA increase costs Long Island $3.8 Million Annually

A White House decision to suspend a planned rate cut for Federal Housing Administration (FHA) mortgages will cost Long Island homeowners $3.8 million in savings each year, a new study by the National Center for Suburban Studies (NCSS) at Hofstra University has found. (more…)

Allocate $10 Million in the Budget to help New Yorkers avoid Foreclosure

New York State’s Foreclosure Prevention Services Network urges the New York State Senate and Assembly to work together with Governor Andrew Cuomo to allocate funding to ensure the survival of an effective and highly trained network of housing counselors and legal services providers that help families stay in their homes, help seniors avoid foreclosure due to reverse mortgages and give teeth to the comprehensive foreclosure reforms the Governor led last year. JPMorgan settles federal mortgage discrimination suit for $55 million

NEW YORK — JPMorgan Chase said Wednesday that it had agreed to settle a federal lawsuit accusing the bank of working with mortgage brokers who discriminated against minority borrowers for years by charging them $1,000 more than white customers. (more…)

NFHA on Dr. Carson’s testimony for HUD Secretary

National Fair Housing Alliance Statement on the Hearing and Testimony of Dr. Ben Carson, Secretary-Designate for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development

The fair housing community is more hopeful today about U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development‘s (HUD’s) continued support of fair housing after hearing the testimony of Dr. Ben Carson before the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs. Prior to today’s testimony, Dr. Carson had expressed views that seemed to disparage the disparate impact doctrine and the Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing provision of the Fair Housing Act, two fundamental elements of fair housing law. Those views left many wondering if he would be willing to fully enforce the Fair Housing Act. (more…)

HUD charges Bank of America with Discriminatory Lending Practices

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced that it has charged Bank of America, N.A., and two of its employees with violating the Fair Housing Act by discriminatory lending practices against prospective Hispanic mortgage borrowers in Charleston, South Carolina.  (more…)

CFPB orders Transunion and Equifax to pay $23 Million for Deceptive Marketing

CFPB: Credit Reporting Companies Misstated the Cost and Usefulness of the Credit Scores and Products They Sold, Lured Consumers into Costly Recurring Payments

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) took action against Equifax, Inc., TransUnion, and their subsidiaries for deceiving consumers about the usefulness and actual cost of credit scores they sold to consumers. The companies also lured consumers into costly recurring payments for credit-related products with false promises. The CFPB ordered TransUnion and Equifax to truthfully represent the value of the credit scores they provide and the cost of obtaining those credit scores and other services. Between them, TransUnion and Equifax must pay a total of more than $17.6 million in restitution to consumers, and fines totaling $5.5 million to the CFPB. (more…)
