The month of April is designated as Fair Housing Month. We come together as a community and a nation to celebrate the anniversary of the passing of the Fair Housing Act and recommit to the vision of promoting racial and economic integration. Although Congress failed to act in the two terms prior to the 1968 passage of the federal Fair Housing Act, the dramatic aftermath of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination on April 4 pushed Legislators into taking healing action and signing the law on April 11th. The law affirms that it is U.S. policy to promote equitable housing choice and eliminate racial segregation. In order to commemorate such an important event, Long Island Housing Services would like to announce its 1st Fair Housing Poster Contest entitled: Won’t You Be My Neighbor?
Fair Housing Month reminds us that the principle of Fair Housing is not only state and national law, but a fundamental human concept and right for all people in the United States. This year, HUD announced its Fair Housing Month theme: Shared Opportunity in Every Community. Poster contestants are asked to depict this ideal.
As a community we welcome all good neighbors, recognizing the contributions and richness inherent in an inclusive society, which supports and engages respectfully with a wide variety of people from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds and represents all colors, ethnicities and religious traditions.
Through this Fair Housing Poster Contest, LIHS hopes to educate and inspire young people to be aware of the rights and resources available to eliminate housing discrimination and create equal opportunity in every Long Island community.
