While much of the recent discussion over how to fund our schools has focused on districts where enrollment is declining, some districts are being overburdened by increased enrollment. We should be discussing how to shift resources from underburdened districts to overburdened ones, to better serve students Islandwide and reduce segregation’s continuing effect on students. I come to this topic as a nonprofit administrator with deep experience in budgeting, influenced by my work at the intersection of education and housing and by being raised by a father who was an educator.

Newsday Op-Ed: Fair Housing rules are needed for co-ops, too

Painful disparities in health, education, criminal justice, and housing that have come into ever-sharper focus since 2019 make it clear that we must dismantle all systems that lock racial disparities in place, especially policies that allow illegal discrimination to thrive in secrecy. Gov. Kathy Hochul emphasized the importance of fair housing in her 2023 State of the State address, remarking, “For a society to reach its full potential, equal access to housing is a must,” a point she reinforced in Wednesday’s budget address. To achieve that goal, New York needs a strong statewide co-op disclosure law that will help to eliminate the opportunity for illegal housing discrimination by co-op boards. (more…)

NYS can help homeowners — and save money

Update: Thank you Governor Cuomo, Attorney General James, Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie for fully funding the Homeowner Protection Program (HOPP) in the proposed New York State budget..  New York homeowners will particularly need the assistance of experienced Housing Counselors and  Attorneys in dealing with the aftermath of COVID-19 on their ability to pay their mortgages.
