Closed June 17-19, 2024

Long Island Housing Services will be closed June 17-18, 2024 for all day mandatory staff trainings.  We will be closed on June 19, 2024 in celebration of Juneteenth.

On October 9, 2024 at 6pm, Long Island Housing Services, Inc. will hold its 55th Anniversary Gala at Long Island Hilton’s Savoy Ballroom, 598 Broadhollow Rd, Melville, NY 11747. More information, including sponsorships and early bird tickets, to follow.

Please come party with us to celebrate bending the arc of history toward justice for the last 55 years. DJ Steezo is back from when he helped us dance the night away two years ago. The Savoy Ballroom was built for clubbing. And, of course, Ian insisted we end the night with another ice cream bar.

Newsday OpEd: Re-envision schools as enrollment dips

While much of the recent discussion over how to fund our schools has focused on districts where enrollment is declining, some districts are being overburdened by increased enrollment. We should be discussing how to shift resources from underburdened districts to overburdened ones, to better serve students Islandwide and reduce segregation’s continuing effect on students. I come to this topic as a nonprofit administrator with deep experience in budgeting, influenced by my work at the intersection of education and housing and by being raised by a father who was an educator.

Woodbury Real Estate Broker Settles Familial Status and Marital Status Discrimination Complaints

Long Island Housing Services (LIHS) settled a housing advertising discrimination complaint against Shawn A. McLaughlin based on allegations of Familial Status and Marital Discrimination.  McLaughlin is a licensed associate broker with an office in Woodbury, New York. (more…)

Smithtown Apartment Complex Settles Familial Status and Source of Income Discrimination Complaints

As seen in Long Island Business News, Newsday, and The Real Deal:

Long Island Housing Services (LIHS) settled a Familial Status and Source of Income complaint against Harbour Club LLC d/b/a Willow Lake Apartments. In 2021, as part of the systemic investigation for potential source of income discrimination, LIHS’ testers posed as ordinary home seekers to document the treatment they experienced for LIHS to determine compliance with fair housing laws.

What did W.D. say about Carmen?

As I wrote previously, I often write to you about Long Island Housing Services‘ civil rights work fighting housing discrimination, as chronicled in the media stories. 

Our work also includes overcoming housing insecurity on other fronts. I wanted to tell you what a client who preferred to be called W.D. had to say about LIHS Housing Counselor Carmen Land-Wilson who helped secure a $95,000 grant from the now-closed Homeowner Assistance Fund (HAF): (more…)
